Overview

Translate UL 1642 Requirements into an Equipment RFQ

Start from the authorized test program, not from a generic chamber name. The DUT construction and method-specific fixture often decide which equipment route is relevant.
The official UL Standards & Engagement listing describes UL 1642 as an active lithium-battery safety standard for primary and secondary batteries used as power sources. Its public scope includes a single electrochemical cell or two or more cells connected together, so buyers should not assume every UL 1642 program is identical or limited to one cell format.

As checked on August 20, 2026, the official listing shows Edition 6, published September 29, 2020, with the latest listed revision dated October 12, 2022. The public revision summary says a Round Bar Crush Test replaced the Impact Test for soft-case pouch cells. Confirm the current licensed text and project authorization before fixing the equipment specification. Review the official UL 1642 listing.

Use this page to prepare

  • DUT chemistry, construction, dimensions, mass, terminals, and sample count
  • The applicable UL 1642 edition, revision, method set, and project authority
  • Method-specific fixtures, electrical ratings, temperature conditions, and observations
  • Containment, exhaust, monitoring, data, utilities, and acceptance requirements

Scope and certification boundary

  • Bellue supplies equipment, configuration, installation, and commissioning support.
  • Bellue does not provide the UL standard text, determine conformity, operate as the certification body, or guarantee a pass result.
  • The customer, authorized laboratory, or project authority owns method selection, test execution, and conformity decisions.
Bellue Routes

Choose the Equipment Route by Test Function

Separate mechanical abuse, electrical fault, and thermal exposure before comparing quotations. A single product name does not define a complete UL 1642 capability.

Mechanical Abuse

Crush and Impact Equipment Routes

Use the current authorized method and DUT construction to decide whether the project needs round-bar crush, another crush configuration, or an applicable impact route.

  • Do not treat crush and impact as interchangeable
  • Define fixture geometry, force or energy control, and specimen orientation
  • Confirm observation and containment around the expected failure mode

Electrical Fault

Short-Circuit Equipment and Thermal Conditions

Define the circuit ratings, conductor and resistance requirements, switching, measurement, and any controlled ambient condition before selecting the system.

  • State maximum voltage and prospective current
  • Define temperature control and measurement channels
  • Separate electrical capability from chamber containment

Project Integration

Multi-Method Lab and Custom RFQ Planning

When several methods share utilities, exhaust, data acquisition, or safety zoning, plan the lab as a system instead of buying isolated machines.

  • Map DUT flow, quarantine, and post-test observation
  • Define local-contractor and facility responsibilities
  • Agree FAT, SAT, training, and documentation deliverables

Selection Guidance

RFQ Inputs That Prevent an Incomplete Quote

The useful specification is method-led and facility-aware. Share what the equipment must do, what it must contain, and what evidence must be delivered.

DUT DefinitionProvide chemistry, primary or secondary construction, pouch/cylindrical/prismatic format, dimensions, mass, terminals, state of charge, and batch size.

Method and Fixture

Identify the authorized edition and method, then state fixture geometry, actuation, electrical ratings, temperature conditions, and required tolerances.

Safety and Observation

Define shielding, containment, smoke or gas handling, remote viewing, sensors, interlocks, emergency response, and post-test access.

Facility and Acceptance

Share power, exhaust, drainage, compressed air, floor loading, installation scope, FAT/SAT criteria, calibration, training, and report needs.

These are starting points, not a declaration that one catalog model satisfies every UL 1642 method. Confirm the current method, DUT, fixture, ratings, safeguards, and acceptance plan through the RFQ.

FAQ

UL 1642 Equipment Planning Questions

Use the current purchased standard and the project authority’s instructions for the actual method. These answers only frame equipment procurement.

What product formats are within the public UL 1642 scope?

The official public scope covers primary and secondary lithium batteries used as power sources and describes both single-cell and multi-cell constructions. Confirm the complete current scope and the product authority’s requirements before defining equipment.

Why must pouch-cell crush and impact be separated?

The official October 12, 2022 revision summary says a Round Bar Crush Test replaced the Impact Test for soft-case pouch cells. That makes DUT construction and the authorized revision essential RFQ inputs; it does not mean one generic machine automatically covers both routes.

Can one machine cover every UL 1642 method?

Not by assumption. Mechanical abuse, electrical fault, and thermal exposure can require different actuation, fixtures, ratings, controls, containment, utilities, and acceptance checks. Bellue should confirm each quoted function against the supplied method set.

Can Bellue certify a battery to UL 1642?

No. Bellue supplies and supports test equipment. The customer, authorized laboratory, certification body, or project authority determines applicable methods, executes or witnesses testing, and makes conformity decisions.

When should the project move to a broader battery system?

Escalate when DUT size, stored energy, pack interfaces, ventilation, fire protection, handling, or facility zoning exceeds the practical scope of compact equipment. Share the largest present and planned DUT, not only today’s sample.

What should be sent with the RFQ?

Send the applicable edition and method list, DUT drawings and ratings, sample count, state-of-charge controls, fixtures, measurement channels, containment and exhaust requirements, utilities, installation location, FAT/SAT criteria, calibration, training, and required records.

Next Step

Send the Authorized Method Set and DUT Details

Bellue can compare equipment routes, safeguards, utilities, installation, and acceptance deliverables when the RFQ defines the real lithium cell or battery program.
