This guide helps laboratory managers, facilities engineers and procurement teams compare installation boundaries before ordering. Start with the required temperature profile and specimen load, then check room conditions, available cooling services and responsibility for site work. A lower equipment price can be offset by unplanned building work.
What air-cooled and water-cooled actually describe
These terms describe how the refrigeration condenser rejects heat. They do not mean that cooling water is sprayed onto the specimen or that an air-cooled chamber has no refrigeration system. ESPEC’s application guidance describes room-air heat rejection for its smaller air-cooled systems and water cooling for many larger systems. It also identifies a remote air-cooled condenser as a possible alternative where water cooling is impractical. Those are configuration principles, not a guarantee that every chamber model offers all three choices.
For a Bellue project, first identify the appropriate environmental chamber family. Ask for the available condenser arrangements for the proposed model and the performance conditions attached to each quotation.
Compare three installation arrangements

Use the comparison as an RFQ discussion aid, not as a universal selection rule. Chamber size alone does not settle the choice. The proposed refrigeration package, loaded temperature transitions and site conditions must be evaluated together.
For room air cooling, ask where the heat goes
Give facilities a supplier-issued heat-rejection figure for the proposed configuration, with its operating basis. Do not use chamber volume, heater rating or a nominal compressor label as a substitute. Ask which operating step produces the design condition and whether the figure includes the full equipment package.
Record the room’s normal and worst expected temperatures at the equipment location. Include other chambers, ovens, test racks and occupants in the facilities review. Request condenser intake and discharge clearances, service access and an approved layout. Do not add improvised ductwork: obtain written supplier approval for any air-routing arrangement and its effect on performance.
ESPEC specifically warns that ambient conditions can affect air-cooled chamber performance. Use the limits stated for your quoted system rather than transferring a temperature threshold from another manufacturer’s example.
For water cooling, define the connection conditions
A statement that the building “has cooling water” is not a complete utility specification. Ask the chamber supplier to provide required inlet temperature limits, flow, available pressure, allowable pressure drop, return conditions, connection sizes and water-quality requirements. Facilities should confirm these at the intended connection point, including simultaneous demand from other users.
Record who supplies isolation valves, filtration, treatment, hoses or pipework, monitoring and any separate cooling plant. Also ask what happens during a planned building shutdown or a loss of cooling service. The purpose is to expose responsibility gaps before delivery, not to prescribe a piping design without a site review.
Keep condenser cooling water separate in the utility schedule from water used for humidity generation. Their functions and specifications must be confirmed separately. Do not assume a single water connection is suitable for both.
For a remote condenser, resolve the route early
Send a site sketch showing the proposed outdoor position, distance, elevation change, access and nearby obstructions. Ask the supplier to approve the route, environmental design conditions and installation method. Obtain a clear division between factory-supplied components and locally installed work.
The quotation should address transport, lifting, mounting, weather protection where specified, electrical interfaces, commissioning and service access. Confirm which qualified contractor performs the refrigeration work and who verifies the completed installation. An available outdoor space is only the beginning of that review.
Keep chamber performance and building utilities in one quotation
Provide the test profile, specimen dimensions and mass, fixture arrangement, powered heat load and operating schedule. Request guaranteed performance under stated load and utility conditions. A quotation based on an empty chamber should not be silently treated as a guarantee for an energized assembly.
For larger systems, the walk-in and drive-in chamber range is a useful starting point. For unusual access, utilities or layouts, use the custom system RFQ and attach the site drawing.
Compare total installed cost with the same assumptions
Ask every bidder to separate equipment, site installation, building modifications, commissioning and recurring maintenance. Record whether the comparison includes room HVAC, a cooling plant, outdoor equipment, local contractors, water treatment and service visits. Avoid a percentage-saving claim unless the underlying duty cycle and utility costs are stated.
Use the same annual operating hours and test mix for each option. Where consumption data is unavailable, mark it as an open quotation item rather than inserting a plausible number. The lowest-cost arrangement is project-specific; this guide does not establish a universal efficiency ranking.

Is water cooling always the better choice?
No universal choice follows from the label. Compare the offered chamber’s performance with your available utilities, installation scope and operating requirements.
Can I convert the cooling arrangement after delivery?
Do not assume it is a field-selectable option. Ask the manufacturer whether a conversion is supported and obtain a defined engineering and commissioning scope before planning one.
What should be fixed before placing the order?
Agree on the configuration, performance basis, site utility limits, responsibility matrix and acceptance checks. Unresolved site items should remain visible in the order review.
